Riding on the Road

Always wear a properly fitted helmet.

Check your bike for brakes, tires inflated, reflectors, lights, mirrors.

A bicycle is a vehicle with the same rights and responsibilities as cars. Obey ALL traffic rules, including stop signs, yield signs and traffic lights. You can be ticketed! (Fl. Statutes 331.2065)

Ride with the flow of traffic. Do not ride on the street facing traffic.

Ride in the bike lane unless it is unsafe to do so (parked car, debris in road).

If unsafe to use bike lane, ride as close to the right curb as “practicable and safe”. {Fl.Statutes 316.2065 (5)(a)}

Ride with a buddy and in single file.

Carry identification.

Wear light colored clothing so you will be seen!

Use lights between sunset and sunrise. A white light on the front and red on the back.

Use rear mirrors that attach to handlebars or helmets.

Do not use headphones. Headphones are a distraction to important noises in the street. A single earbud is permitted under Florida law so long as surrounding sounds may be heard through one ear. (Fl.Statutes 316.304)

Watch for obstructions

Debris, potholes, car doors opening, pedestrians crossing the street

Riding on the Sidewalk

When riding on the sidewalk, pedestrians have the right-of-way!

If passing, ring your bell and say “Passing on the left!”

If people are walking toward you, stop so they can pass.
